AWExpeditions organizes mountaineering and remote adventures for women, by women.
AWExpeditions decreases barriers of entry to mountaineering for women from all walks of life. Here’s how we do that:
• We provide a platform for women to make forays into the world of mountaineering in an all-women or mostly-women environment
• We tell and amplify the stories of women in the high mountains and remote backcountry to provide powerful role models for women with an interest in pushing their boundaries in the outdoors
• We offer all- or mostly-women skill-building trips and workshops as stepping stones into the big mountain realm
• We provide funding for women to participate in extraordinary mountaineering expeditions, skill-building trips and stepping stone experiences
***about the name… AWE is short for Awe-inspiring Women’s Expeditions and is pronounced /ô/, just like ‘awe’
After a successful climb of 22,838ft Aconcagua Peak in 2014, Sunny Stroeer returned home with a newfound appreciation for both high altitude climbing and the gender gap in mountaineering. Having been deeply involved in efforts to address gender bias and women empowerment both in graduate school and throughout her corporate career, Sunny decided to take a step beyond simply lamenting the gender gap in the mountains and instead actively do something about it; the seed for AWExpeditions was planted.
what we love
Founder Sunny Stroeer was the first woman to complete a solo accent of Aconcagua's 64-mile 360 Route in 2018 and now guides women on this route through AWExpeditions.
