Color the Water
Joyful anti-racist surf lessons for BIPOC
Color The Water is…a community for BIPOC to reclaim space in the ocean through joyful, defiant anti-racist surf lessons, celebrations, education, and media.
Color the water is creating a new surf culture through:
- Instruction
Color the Water offers free surf lessons and media for all BIPOC. We believe that by creating 10,000 autonomous surfers of color, we can fight racism joyfully and shift surf culture to truly include all people. - Education
Surf history and surf culture are filled stories of racism, and also of heroes who have fought against it. We are developing resources for people to learn more about this, as well as tools for those not in LA to learn how to gain ocean access remotely. - Representation
As we move toward creating a surf culture centered around diversity and anti-racism, we embrace the importance of telling these stories using modern storytelling tools. Photography, videography, audio, and prose are a big part of our mission to shift the culture by creating new narratives.
Color the Water began as a way to fight racism after the murder of George Floyd. We wanted to fight racism with joy, so we started to offer free surf lessons and media for BIPOC in the LA area. Now we are a diverse, inclusive, anti-racist safe space for hundreds of BIPOC surfers.
Lizelle Jackson: active is probably one of the best ways to describe Lizelle. A former collegiate athlete and professional volleyball player, she spent almost a decade guiding cycling and hiking adventures across the globe. If she’s not surfing, biking or hiking then she is probably indulging in her other passion….eating desserts.
