Rugged Thread

Wear it. Love it. Repair it.

Rugged Thread offers technical outdoor clothing & gear repair. We're changing the paradigm of clothing waste. Our goal is to make the repair experience easy, affordable, and of the highest quality while contributing to the well-being of our planet and communities.

We believe in converting broken gear into a new economy.
New economies are created by new, high-growth industries that are on the cutting edge of technology and are the driving force of economic growth. The Outdoor Industry in the U.S. is valued at $788 billion. It’s larger than the oil, gas and coal industry combined. Within that, we estimate that the Outdoor Repair Industry is currently valued at $30 million and growing rapidly.

We are changing the paradigm of how business is done in the Outdoor Industry by closing the loop. We believe in innovation and its application of better solutions to meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, and existing but unfulfilled market niches. In order to support this new, high-growth trajectory, the repair industry will need to engineer, develop, and standardize repair tools and processes; software to manage inventory, product flow, customer communication, quality control, and shipping; and collaboration with the outdoor industry to define and implement Design For Reparability (DFR).

Learning to sew at the age of thirteen combined with the love of being outdoors became a gateway of opportunity that has served her ever since. At 18 founder and CEO Kim Kinney dropped out of college to follow the snow, eventually landing at Utah’s Snowbird Ski Resort where she found work at the mountain tailor shop. Besides skiing every day, she learned the classical art of tailoring and applied it to the ski industry. By 20 she owned the shop, Wasatch Design, where they not only repaired skiwear but also designed and manufactured their own line of fleece and specialized in custom outerwear for individual skiers all over the U.S. Kim finished her higher education at OSU in the fall of 2016 just as Rugged Thread, which she started in 2011, began to demand her full attention. Over the years, she’s seen the Outdoor Industry change its focus from production and sales to addressing sustainability, environmental issues, over-consumption and waste. Now Kim is transforming broken gear into a new repair economy.
